A plane designed for a tad over three months during late WWII, and yet still one of the most capable piston engine fighters ever made. P Mustangs and P Lightnings, flying very low to avoid radar detection, bombed and strafed countless airfields and infantry columns. Pilots of the P, after escorting bombers into Germany (see section immediately below), often freely attacked ground.
Over twenty variants of the North American P Mustang fighter were produced fromwhen it first flew, to after the Second World War, some of which were employed also in the Korean War and in several other conflicts. Numerous examples of the aircraft survive to this day, often as heavily modified air racers.
The public mostly remembers the North American P Mustang as the fighter plane that protected Allied bombers over Germany and Japan during World War II.
